EDUCATION TOPIC

School Garden and Outdoor Education at Raft River
Elizabeth Shook presented the vision of Raft River Elementary teachers for outdoor learning. Outdoor projects, which include a garden, help students develop a deeper connection to the curriculum by enriching and enhancing student learning and engagement. Read more

Raft River Parent Advisory Committee
Sarah Affleck
, member of the Raft River Elementary PAC, reported on their recent purchase of math bins to support the school’s numeracy initiatives. In addition, the spring chocolate sale fundraiser has raised over $900 to further support the school.

30 Years of Service
Jasbir Kailey, a Certified Education Assistant at Raft River Elementary was recognized by the Board as she will be retiring after 30 years of working with SD73 in Clearwater. Trustee Sims also noted that Jasbir is a member of the small, but very generous Sikh community that recently donated the proceeds of the sale of their temple to organizations throughout Clearwater.  Read more

 

REPORTS FROM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOL

Employee Code of Conduct
The board’s desire to foster an inclusive, adaptable and accountable district culture was noted during the presentation of a new Employee Code of Conduct. An Employee Code of Conduct was a recommendation in the Employee Engagement Report published this year. Following a review by the Employee Policy Advisory Committee, this new administrative procedure will be introduced to all employees in September 2019.

Out of Province Field Trip
Valleyview Secondary School Band is planning a trip to Edmonton, from May 8 to 12, 2019. The 38 students will take part in musician workshops, perform, and attend a concert by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The trip will also include visiting the Alberta Legislature and a tour of Edmonton’s historic downtown.

YMCA Strong Kids Fundraising Challenge
Mission Slimpossible, the aptly named team representing SD73, handily won the Y Strong Kids Fundraiser trophy for the third year in a row. With more donations still to come, Mission Slimpossible raised $8,113 towards The Strong Kids Campaign to provide financial assistance to kids and families, ensuring that Y programming is accessible to everyone. Chair’s Report

  • Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Literacy in Kamloops (LinK) Spelling Bee on May 16, 2019.
  • Two trustees are required to serve on the legacy committee to help determine the terms of the grants the Board of Education has available to distribute.
