ParticipACTION's Community Better Challenge starts May 31

Residents of Kamloops are invited to participate in ParticipACTION’s “Community Better” challenge—a national competition where communities will compete for a $150,000 prize.

The challenge, which kicks off May 31 and runs until June 16, encourages communities across Canada to connect with friends and neighbours and build social bonds while participating in physical activity.

With support from the City of Kamloops, School District No. 73 (SD73), PacificSport Interior BC, and other local organizations, PLAY Kamloops is leading the local campaign to get Kamloops residents moving.

Committee members from PLAY Kamloops are working across various sectors to promote the competition. They’ve connected with SD73, with local sports and fitness organizations, and with employees in the City of Kamloops. Their goal is to create as much awareness of the competition as possible before the competition starts on May 31.

Katie Klassen, PacificSport Interior BC’s Sport Participation Coordinator, is eager to get Kamloops on board. “The goal is to encourage Kamloops-based organizations, businesses, and residents to sign up and start tracking their movement minutes. We already know Kamloops residents are incredibly active, so if local businesses encourage their employees to participate in the competition and local sports teams and fitness organizations start logging their minutes, we’ll have a great chance of winning.”

Sherry Stade and Alexandra Inglis from SD73 encourage youth and families to connect and move together. “SD73 is working with schools and families to help everyone learn the benefits of social connectedness and physical activity. We invite all of Kamloops to participate in the competition, follow our two-week Movement Calendar, and prove that Kamloops is Canada’s most active community.”

To get started, create an account on the ParticipACTION website community.participaction.com/login and follow PLAY Kamloops on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) for updates. PLAY Kamloops will post the Movement Calendar at PlayKamloops.com.

If Kamloops wins the Community Better Challenge, the money will go towards an initiative that encourages social connection, community building, and physical activity.
