Class of 2022

Westsyde Secondary School 2022
COMMENCEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

FROM MRS. MCVITTIE

WHAT DO WE DO? WHERE DO WE GO? HELP!

These are your instructions - Keep them and re-read them several times before Grad!

Thursday, June 9th 11:30 Grad Rehearsal

Students will be bussed from WSS to McArthur Island Sports Centre leaving at 11:30 a.m. for a rehearsal of the Commencement Ceremony. ALL STUDENTS MUST RIDE THE BUS. NO ONE
MAY DRIVE IN A CAR. We will rehearse the entire ceremony and return to WSS on the bus. You will be dismissed from school at that time, unless you have overdue work to complete for
teachers.

Thursday, June 9th 5:00 p.m. Social @ Upstairs Lounge, McArthur Island

This social is for staff and students only. It will be held at the Upstairs Lounge at McArthur Island, beginning at 5:00 p.m. There will be a light buffet of appetizers, fruit, and veggies, as well as desserts and non-alcoholic beverages. This is where the Toast to the Students will be given by Ms. Cuthbertson. Students should be appropriately dressed, and ready to put gowns on immediately after the social. (Have family bring your gowns and arrange for your valuables to be store with them. There will not be places to store or hang things up.) After the social, we will move downstairs to the NHL size rink area where students will line up as we practiced in the morning.

1. Keeper Grad Gowns
Gowns will be available for pick-up beginning on Tuesday, May 30th in the main office during morning break, lunch or after school between 3 and 3:30 p.m. You will be given: a gown, a hat and a V-stole. PLEASE WRITE YOUR NAME INSIDE YOUR HAT! PLEASE TAKE YOUR GOWN HOME, HANG IT UP AND IRON IT, THEN BRING IT TO THE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY, WITH THE V-STOLE AND HAT. Students receiving Blue or Gold cords will receive them at this time. During the ceremony, the meaning of the cords will be explained and recipients will be named in the program. District Honour Grads should wear their pin!

2. Semi-formal Attire
Young men must wear dress pants, socks and shoes. A dress shirt and tie is preferable. Young women must wear dress pants or dress or skirt and dress shoes. Please remember that all School District #73 Drug and Alcohol Policies are in effect, as this is a District/School Event.

Sequence of Events for Commencement

The Commencement Ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. The evening begins with the entrance of the platform guests. Next, Mrs. McVittie will invite the staff to enter the arena. (They will sit
behind the grad class.) Mr. Komljenovic and Ms. Preymak will lead the students into the arena and direct you to your seats. This is a formal, serious and happy event. Please walk with dignity
and respect for your classmates, your family, and our many community guests. Do not talk, fool around or chew gum. This is the main event and you are the show. Everyone is watching you so
act accordingly. Please follow behind the leaders and stand in front of your chair until all the grads arrive and remain standing for the singing of O Canada. Mrs. McVittie will ask everyone to
remove their hats for the singing of the national anthem, which will be led by some of our grads. Please sing along. When finished, please sit down and do not clap for the anthem. The agenda
for the evening will be on your seats. Several speakers will address you and your families. Please remember they have come to bring you a message and listen accordingly.

After the last guest has spoken, we will begin calling students to the stage to receive their commencement certificate. Follow the guidance of the teacher leaders who will let you know when it is your row’s turn to rise and move. When your name is called, walk across the stage with dignity and purpose to receive the certificate, then go down the steps to the photo area, where your formal picture will be taken. Scholarships will be presented in the photo area and be photographed, also. After the photo, please return to your seat.

The Valedictorian address will happen after all the grads have received their certificates. Mrs. McVittie will give some concluding remarks. Then, when she says, “ Family and friends, I present to you the Westsyde Grad Class of 2022,” you may throw your hats in the air. Gather your hat back quickly (this is why having your name inside it is important!) and return to your row so that Mr. Komljenovic and Ms. Preymak can lead you out to the grad song “Dani California.” After you have left the arena area, you can meet up with your family for photos.

Clean up of the space will begin half an hour after the ceremony. Please tell your parents that photos can be taken on the stage or in the light tree area after the ceremony. Parents and family
will not be allowed inside the barrier area where grads, platform guests, and staff are seated during the ceremony. Have a wonderful time at Commencement! Please stay safe!

Please ensure that only one appointment time is booked per graduate.

  • Please wear dress clothes under your gown (i.e. blouse, shirt and tie). No t-shirts please.
  • NO pets – sorry, with COVID-19 precautions it’s very difficult.
